As a mentee, it's important to make the most out of your limited time with a mentor. The key to doing this is preparation and good communication.

Preparing for Your Mentoring Sessions

Before each mentoring session, it’s important to assess which topics or skills you would like to focus on. Be prepared with specific questions or areas of interest that you would like to discuss ahead of time. This will ensure that you get the most out of your meeting.

You might want ask them about the challenges they’ve faced in their career, the decisions they’ve made, or the routes they have taken. Asking thoughtful questions can be a great opportunity for professional growth.

Communicating with a Mentor

Mentors are volunteering their time to share their expertise with you, so be mindful of how much time you are taking and try to stay on topic. If you need to cancel or reschedule a meeting, do so with as much notice as possible.

Also, aim to stay on task and avoid rambling.

Mentors are here to help you grow and learn, so be open to their feedback and suggestions. Be receptive to their insights and advice, even if it's not what you were expecting or hoping to hear.

Following through with advice

If your mentor suggests resources or action items, be sure to follow through on them. This shows that you value their time and insight, and that you are committed to your own growth and development.

If you are unable to use the suggested resources be sure to ask your mentor why they were recommended and what you should do instead. Don’t be afraid to go beyond what has been suggested and take the initiative to try something new or different.

Take the time to review your mentor's advice after the meeting. Once you leave the meeting, try to identify which pieces of advice are most important and work on implementing them.
